- Description
Roman Imperial Coinage Vol. X: The Divided Empire and the Fall of the Western Parts 395-491 by Kent, J.P.C. and Carson, R.A.G.
The tenth volume of Roman Imperial Coinage marks the completion of the first edition of the series, initially founded by Mattingly and Sydenham in 1923. This volume's layout intricately divides the eastern and western parts of the empire and chronicles the reigns of successive emperors. Additionally, it features a section dedicated to imitative coinages struck by certain barbarian peoples. Detailed accounts of the monetary system, mints, coin-types, and legends are thoroughly explored. The catalogue includes approximately 3,819 entries, each individually numbered and illustrated by 80 plates.
Not only does the coinage receive a thorough discussion within its historical setting, but it is also examined in a comprehensive and well-documented conceptual context. This makes Roman Imperial Coinage Volume X essential reading for students of the late Roman and Byzantine periods, as well as for collectors. Reprinted by Spink in 2018, this seminal volume is now available again for all those interested in the fascinating period of Roman Imperial coinage.
Dr. John Kent, who joined the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum in 1953 and served as Keeper from 1983 until his retirement in 1990, contributed significantly to this volume. Besides editing the Roman Imperial Coinage series, he is also the author of Roman Imperial Coinage Volume VIII (1981). This work remains the standard reference for Roman Imperial Coinage during the period of the divided Empire and the fall of the Western parts.
