Tavern Checks
From Liverpool And Vicinity
With
the passage of time the face of every city changes. Although taverns
often manifest a durability rivalling (even exceeding) church and civic
structures and institutions, many inevitably vanish, obliterating the
primary evidence of their existence and a way of life the socialogical
importance of which is usually underestimated. Old records survive in
the form of directories, licenses, maps or photographs even literary
mention preserves information about some establishments. For others, the
most substantial remains are metallic checks that were employed on the
premises during the latter half of the last century. While relatively
few Liverpool taverns issued such pieces, enough did to constitute a
body of material representative of the hostelries that thrived and were
central to much of the social and commercial activity of the city.
Although the primary purpose of this catalogue is to record and order
the checks of taverns, some attention has been paid to the circumstances
that provoked emission of the pieces and to place the entire business of
taverns into a broader perspective. The result is, admittedly,
preliminary, but it may be hoped that it is promising in suggesting
further avenues of investigation.
