Offers a comprehensive guide to more than 640 of the best preserved and most interesting prehistoric monuments considered worth visiting in England. It is based on the descriptions originally published in 1969-73 in the eight books of the 'Discovering Regional Archaeology' series. In this book all of the original entries have been reconsidered and revised or re-written where appropriate, and a large number of new sites have been included. The book considers a whole range of prehistoric sites that span some 350,000 years and a whole range of prehistoric sites and range from caves occupied in the palaeolithic period to the oppida built immediately before the Roman conquest. In between come the chambered barrows of the Cotswolds, the hillforts of the chalk downlands, great stone circles like Avebury and Stonehenge and lesser monuments such as the burial cairns and standing stones scattered from the isles of Scilly to Northumberland. The sites are arranged by counties in alphabetical order, and instructions for finding them with National Grid references are given throughout. Location maps and some site plans, together with many photographs, complete a detailed pocket handbook to the wealth of prehistoric field monuments in England. Black & White Edition; 296 pages; Numerous photographs throughout.
