 Sylloge
of Coins of the British Isles 59 - THE NORWEB COLLECTION.
Tokens of the British Isles 1575 - 1750 Part VII - City of London.
This SCBI volume concentrates on the tokens of the City of London, that
"One Square Mile" which remains distinct from the rest of
London. Certain streets (etc.) shared with other administrative areas
have been placed where their greater part lay.
Some token issuers have been found amongst the "rulers of
London" and freemen of livery companies. A number had to rebuild
after the Great Fire of 1666. A surprising variety of trade is
represented.
The tokens have been attributed in the light of published information
known to the authors, and those appearing uncertain, or belonging to
more than one possible location, have been left to the next volume, as
have a small number of forgeries.
Of the 1,443 types in this volume more than 230 are not in Williamson's
catalogue and few have been illustrated previously. Many readings have
been corrected, several duplicate records eliminated and tokens
reattributed from Middlesex, Ireland and an "uncertain"
category.
A concordance facilitates reference by Williamson number or additions by
Dickinson. There is a very rare leather piece, and a goodly scattering
of pennies. Most of these were issued from coffee-houses and an essay on
coffee-house tokens is included.
Crown quarto, 386 pages, including 61 plates, one folding map. Bound in
