British
Historical Medals, 1760 – 1960. Volume 2. The Reign of Queen Victoria,
1837 – 1901.
The first volume of this definitive major catalogue of British
historical medals was hailed by dealers, collectors and reviewers as a
landmark in numismatic literature, and a welcome addition to that tiny
group of works which will remain unchallenged as standard sources of
reference on particular aspects of art.
Laurence Brown's second volume, covering the reign of Queen Victoria,
explores another rich period in the history of Britain and of the medals
which record it. The reign of Queen Victoria witnessed wars,
considerable advances in learning, science and the arts, and a rapidly
changing way of life for the nation as a whole. A useful introduction
outlines the historical background, and the major events and
developments of the reign; additional biographical and historical
footnotes to the medals are given throughout the catalogue, bringing
much previously unpublished information to light and adding considerably
to the interest and use of the catalogue.
Every major public collection of historical medals has been examined in
compiling this volume. Nearly 2000 medals are listed in chronological
order, giving full details of subject, style and designer, dimensions,
metals in which the medals was made, rarity, bibliographical references
and present locations in major collections. Detailed indexes of people,
events, inscriptions, designers, etc, are also included. This long
awaited work is the only comprehensive catalogue of Victorian medals and
is a mine of information, not only for numismatists, but also for anyone
interested in Britain's industrial and political history, military and
naval events or the arts and sciences in Victorian England.
Spink have just undertaken quality reprints of the much in demand and
long out of print volumes 1 & 2 of this monumental work.
Both volumes have been commanding high prices and have become out of the
reach of the average collector so it was decided, in consultation with
the author, to produce a limited reprint to satisfy current demand.
These are unchanged reprints but have been refreshed with new colour
dust-jackets, produced on quality paper and bound in Wibalin buckram so
the feel is identical to the originals. The reproduction of the
photographs is of a high standard and we feel that the quality is very
consistent with the originals.
