An analysis of hoards and single finds of late Saxon and Norman coins, to discover what they can tell us about monetary circulation in eleventh century England. At the heart of the book is a series of 39 questions and answers, which demonstrate a general methodology for interpreting coin finds, which hopefully will be of interest to students in other areas as well. There is a prolongued discussion of the enigmatic topic of weight variation and some new thoughts on the Second Hand and Expanding Cross types. Then follow separate sections on each of the 31 periodic types, gathering up the results of the detailed researches of recent decades, and providing bibliographical references. There is a commentary on the significance of each published hoard (if adequately recorded). Next there are 12 regional surveys of groups of shires, with larger scale maps.
