The Alfred Jewel is
perhaps the best-known archaeological object in England, and the
Museum is fortunate to house also the Minster Lovell Jewel, the only
piece truly comparable to it. These are traditionally associated with
King Alfred the Great, and together with the Abingdon sword provide
much of the little surviving evidence about English art in one of its
most formative periods, the late ninth and early tenth centuries.
