SHOEBOX LIBRARY BOOKLET No: 11 What's in a name? NY24376770 marks to within 10 metres the site of a holiday caravan pitch I once owned: a Kleenex tissue-sized patch of grass which archaeologists of the 22nd century will no doubt insist on scheduling if they ever put a trial trench through the spot where my chemical toilet once stood. 'Twas there I frequently emptied my grots bag after expeditions to local detecting sites. I shall chuckle in my grave if I can overhear what they make of a hoard of George III z-grade halfpennies lying beneath a hoard of 4th century bronzes of indeterminate emperors! If they declare it Viking loot they will not be far wrong because I found some of the items with a Viking detector during the early days of detecting when just about everybody in the hobby kept a basic Viking as a reliable back-up machine. To tell you that the caravan site is on the Solway Firth and not a stone's throw from the village of Glasson merely wastes paper and ink. The unique O. S. references and a GPs would guide you infallibly to the very spot. (In truth, I've altered a couple of figures to save any present caravan dwellers in that part of the country the nuisance of pester-some callers.) But imagine the difficulties of providing the exact location of my hoards a couple of thousand years ago and long before Ordnance Survey made pinpointing so easy. The Anglo-Saxons would have faced similar difficulties ... and the Elizabethans ... Stuarts ... Georgians ... Victorians ... even pre WW2 20th century map users had no O. S. figures to quote. Not until the late 1940's was the entire country pinned down beneath the mesh of eastings and northings. .... (continued in the booklet) Price: £4.50 + £1.25 p&p U. K. (Ref: b0379)
