The Vikings in Norfolk

The Vikings who swept across the northern seas in sleek warships have always caught the imagination. They first came to East Anglia in 866AD, recorded by the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as 'a great heathen army', but the evidence they left here as settlers shows that they were mostly ordinary peasant farmers and their wives. Their place-names, legal terms and language still survive.

Much-loved styles of decoration continued across the generations. The incomers were seeking land like their own back home and once settled, they carried on their lives much as before.
