The author wants this booklet to help you determine whether or not you have found a coin from the 5th to 11th centuries. But you can only do so if you handle Anglo-Saxon coins and artefacts at every opportunity. Go coin fairs, especially those with stalls run by antiquities dealers ... go to Find-of-the-Month nights at your local club ... ask the most successful members to let you admire some of their Anglo-Saxon finds ... and examine your own discoveries very carefully to interpret the clues. Be alert by the time you get to page 48. While turning the pages of this booklet, constantly remind yourself it's still no substitute for the hands-on experience. Compared to the average professional archaeologist, who is probably not an Anglo-Saxon specialist, WE, the detectorists of Britain, have probably handled far more plough-soil coins and relics dating from the 5th to 11th centuries. WE ARE THE EXPERTS. If we pool are knowledge with coin and artefact dealers; if we read as much as possible around our subject; if we use GPS's to record find spots, we can do at least as good a job of interpreting our Anglo-Saxon plough-soil heritage.
