The late nineteenth century was an exhilarating time for the medal in Britain. In the 1880's, the French Painter Alphonse Legros revolutionised the medium with the introduction to this country of the virtually unknown cast medal.

Encouraging his contempories and students to return to the principles of Italian Renaissance medal-work, he inspired a generation of artists to produce an astonishing body of work. Parallel with this development was the release of the struck medal from the stranglehold of nineteenth century Classicism.
