The Coinage of the Dobunni.

Money Supply and Coin Circulation in Dobunnic Territory. With a Gazeteer of Findspots by Philip de Jersey.

Celtic coins chronicle the economic activities of the Dobunni - an active trading people. Analyses of Dobunnic coinage give new information about two areas of tribal life: the tribe's territory and its economy. The Dobunni are confirmed as important participants in the exchange networks of southern Britain. Contact patterns with their neighbours, well-established by 40 BC, are revealed in detail. One major change in the trading pattern is identified: contact with the Atrebates diminishes by the end of the first century BC. Econometric analyses show fluctuations in the Dobunnic money supply. The magnitude of these is calculated and tentative comments about growth and inflation are made. Net inflows and outflows of gold bullion are estimated as a major component of inter-tribal exchange.
