Provincial Coins: An Introduction to the Greek Imperials
The
area of Greek Imperial numismatics has until now been largely neglected,
both in the field of collecting and study, often because the coins have
been considered too difficult to identify. The series falls between two
stools, that of the Greek numismatist and that of the Roman, and books
dealing with either subject may give Greek Imperials some mention, but
this usually amounts to little more than defining the series as a huge
and confusing area. Roman
Provincial Coins fills
that gap, introducing the reader to this fascinating subject, a rich
source for ancient political and economic history and art. It is the
first general book devoted to the subject of Greek Imperial numismatics
and complements Greek Imperial Coins and their Values by David
Sear. Examining
the provincial coins, firstly to find out what they are and what they
were used for and then to study the designs and the geographical
distribution of these issues, the book integrates provincial coinage
with the imperial issues in line with current thinking. CONTENTS:
