Catalogue of the Early Northumbrian Coins in the museum of Antiquities (Newcastle upon Tyne)

Compiled in 1980 by Elizabeth Pirie, the catalogue forms part of the extensive numismatic coin cabinet of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-uponTyne, and only part of the British coin collection. At the time of compilation, due to the then incomplete state of research , it was not possible to introduce a chronological arrangement of the catalogues coins by types struck by several moneyers concurrently. The traditional listing, alphabetically by moneyers, has therefore been retained. Where appropriate, the coins of a moneyer have been sub-divided by the form of the King's name and helpfully, names are spelt as far as possible, as they are on the coins. Not all the catalogued coins are illustrated, 171 types have been presented within this book and are identified accordingly. After the introduction, comments are made on the early 19th century hoards from Kirkoswald; Hexham and Heworth. Discovered in 1812, the Heworth hoard was apparently unearthed when a grave was being dug in the burial new burial ground of the chapel of Heworth (just on the boundary of the old ground). One of the coins together with the pot in which they were found, was presented to the society in 1814, by the Rev. John Hodgson, incumbent of the church. Motifs on the Northumbrian sceattas and stycas are shown and the catalogue details over 400 types. Photographs of both the 'Hexham Bucket' and 'Heworth Pot' are shown.
