Public House Tokens in England and Wales c. 1830 - c. 1920

This book, based on the writer’s doctoral thesis, explores all aspects of the phenomenon of 19th century pub tokens against the twin backgrounds of pubs and the Birmingham die-sinking industry. It presents a fascinating picture of small workshop enterprise in Victorian Britain and deals fully with the ways in which the tokens were used - featuring music halls, clubs, games and pleasure gardens and other strands of the leisure and working life of the period. This book looks also at the strange distribution of the pub tokens, common in some areas and rare in others, finding explanations by directing attention to die-sinkers, identifying their output, mapping the distribution of the products of individual makers and showing how the tokens reached their landlord customers. Small-scale operators, such as the die-sinkers who made this and other contemporary token series, were innovative, adaptive and enterprising. Collectively such minor concerns played a huge, and largely unrecognised role in the expanding Victorian economy. Those studying other series will find similarities and contrasts as well as inspiration for their own research.
