Verification Marks on Weights. The administrative background.

One of a series of books developed from the author's earlier book English Weights: an illustrated survey. That book contains an outline of weights of all types and periods, without in any sense claiming completeness. Each book in this series offers a more comprehensive study of a major topic. The aim being to provide a fairly complete survey of the artefactual evidence, especially for the modern period. For older weights both artefacts and documentary evidence are scarce, and completeness is rarely possible. A complementary aim is to describe the historical context for the use of weights of various kinds, and the many different weight-systems which have been employed. Although it is not always appropriate to refer in detail to the extensive research which lies behind the text, each book has an annotated bibliography to guide the reader who requires more information. This book is based upon a series of five articles published in Equilibrium, the journal of the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors, 1995-96. Although well over 100 marks are illustrated here, they represent only a small proportion of those which have been recorded.
