Victorian Commemorative
Jubilee Jewellery
On 21st June, 1887, Victoria, Queen and Empress of lands on which the sun never set, drove from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey to give thanks to God for her fifty years on the Throne of England. Thousands of her subjects from all over the globe, together with her British subjects, lined the richly decorated streets in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Monarch they loved so devotedly. The press, meanwhile, were loudly acclaiming her achievements during her reign: the railways, free trade press and export, the telegraph, progress, prosperity and peace. Although Royal events had been celebrated for hundreds of years, the Golden Jubilee was the first ever to be recorded. In order to mark the occasion Queen Victoria had to relax her rule of deep mourning and, as a result, there came about a huge demand for commemorative jewellery of all types, including badges, brooches, bracelets, lockets, pendants and chains. So great was it, that manufacturers were caught unawares as demand far exceeded supply, prompting 'The Watchmaker, Jeweller and Silversmith' magazine to declare that, 'it was a pity Jubilees came around so seldom....' During the ten years following her Golden Jubilee, Queen Victoria never again reverted to her former seclusion and her popularity grew and grew. It's not surprising that the Diamond Jubilee was even more grandiose than the Golden Jubilee and every town, village and hamlet came out to celebrate. The grand procession in London to a much wider berth than for the Golden Jubilee and its numbers were swelled enormously as every Colony had sent out a detachment of troops. Jewellery manufacturers, endeavouring to learn of their mistakes in 1887, decided that this time the supply of commemorative trinkets would not run out. It became boom time once again. Official medals were issued once again and another huge output of souvenir medals were struck. Features: Lockets, Fobs and Charms. Brooches, Badges, Jet Jewellery and its Imitations, Base Metal Jewellery, Hallmarks and Makers Marks plus much more. 48 pages; 21 full colour plates; Valuation Guide; Full colour cover; Paperback.
