Guide Catalogue of the Bronze Age Collections.

If I lived in Wales I would not be reviewing this book. I would be off, with a copy of it under my arm, to visit the unidentifiable spots where many of the hoards and single bronze relics included in this catalogue were found. I'm sure I could persuade some of the present landowners to let me search with a detector on the usual 'fifty/fifty' agreement. I'm truly confident that with this information in my hands, I should make some exciting discoveries.

Don't be put off by the dull green and quite uninteresting cover of this book. This type of cover is of course the norm with many museum publications. For it's a source of red-hot information on where the diligent detectorist who follows its clues, will I feel sure shortly be 'bleeping' over discoveries as thrilling as anything illustrated in those 'treasure hunting' books we have all enjoyed in recent years. The difference is of course that these ancient treasures were lost or hidden three or four thousand years ago and they can now be found with a metal detector or by sheer fluke.

The catalogue includes all the Bronze Age objects deposited in the National Museum of Wales collection up to some twenty-five years or so ago. For this reason there are no metal detectorists' finds listed. Virtually every Bronze Age object in the museum at that date, had been found by, a farm labourer, a building site worker, a road maker, or an eccentric Victorian clergyman-cum grave robber.

I love books, which include line drawings, and this one is full of superb ones, made by the museums departmental illustrators, Colin Williams and Paul Hughes.

Even without those potentially still productive find spots, the book would make a worthwhile buy for its illustrations alone.
