Lists and illustrates the collection of British, Irish and Continental provenanced and unprovenanced prehistoric metalwork in the Merseyside County Museums. The book opens with the 'History of the collection' followed by its documentation. The catalogue is divided into two sections: the first part contains the provenanced material grouped in broad geographical areas and within each area, arranged according to locality. Where there is more than one item from a locality they are put chronologically. The second part of the catalogue contains unprovenanced material arranged typologically. Most of the items were probably found in Britain or Ireland. There are over 350 fine line drawings accompanying the detailed text, a representative selection of items including: - A large selection of palstaves; axe-heads; spears; chisels; swords; rapiers; knives and daggers. There are many items of body ornaments featured including pins; brooches; bracelets; and a mirror with engraved Celtic decoration on the back. The accompanying notes state '………the place of discovery unknown, it was probably found in the bed of the Thames, in the neighbourhood of Barnes' The catalogue has an index of sites in Britain, Ireland and throughout other parts of Europe.
