Acquisitions of Badges (1983-1987)

British Museum Occasional Paper No: 76

The British Museum's collection of modern badges grew significantly during 1983-1987, largely through donations. It would be impractical and, in the end, futile to aim to acquire a comprehensive collection of material such as this. Equally it would be misleading to claim that the Museum's collection, of which the acquisitions of the last few years form a major part, can be considered in any way representative of modern badge production.

The earliest badges listed here celebrate Queen Victoria's jubilees and the military leaders of the Boer War. The latest relate to a wide range of issues, from the British general election of 1987 and the policies of President Reagan to the proliferation of fast food outlets and home computers.

The badges of each country are divided into four main sections: political, promotional, occupational and badges for their own sake. Two appendices list by country the badge manufacturers and distributors represented in The British Museum's collection, and discuss patents and registered designs.

Large Format; 297 x 210mm; 256 pages; Softback.
